The Tams

The Tams, R&B and Beach Music Band

THE TAMS have been entertaining and thrilling audiences for over 50 years! Known for such hits as "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy", "What Kind of Fool", "I've Been Hurt" and "Untie Me #12 on the R&B Charts", The Tams have had Several Gold Records, and 1 Platinum Single. "What Kind of Fool" hit #9 on the Billboard charts, and #6 on the R&B charts. "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" hit #1 in the UK in 1971. While "Be Young, Be Foolish" only hit #26 on the Top 40, the single sold over 1,000,000 copies, sending it to Platinum status. In 1986, "Ain't Nothin Like Shaggin' " hit #6 in UK Billboard charts, before being banned due to the UK's definition of "shag". Though their style of music has historically been referred to as Beach Music which they have had many Beach Music hits, it can be also classified as a mixture of Smooth Soul, and R&B.

The Tams have had four #1 songs at the national, and international levels, as well as one major regional hit:

  • What Kind of Fool – #1 R& B / #6 Top 40 (1963) –     This was The Tams first national hit record, bringing them into the households of millions through a tremendous amount of airplay.
  • Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy – #26 Top 40 (1968) –     This song is The Tams’ greatest US Chart success, selling over 1,000,000 copies and becoming their only RIAA Certified Gold Record single.
  • Hey Girl Don’t Bother Me – Three weeks at #1 in England (1971) One of three UK chart hits for The Tams, this ABC/Dunhill records release also has the distinction of being the the #1 song of year in the UK.
  • Walkin’ Dr. Bill – Officially recorded by “The Tams (with G.C. Cameron),” this was a duet with the former lead singer of The Spinners singing much of the lead. Charles Pope, Lil’ Red Cottle and the rest of the Tams lent excellent background vocals to the song. This heavily R&B-flavored but danceable song sat at #1 for almost a month on the Rhythm-and-Beach Top 40. “Walkin’ Dr. Bill was #1 in the Summer of 2000 and won “Song of the Year” at the 2000 CAMMY Awards.
  • I’ve Been Hurt – Although never on the charts, “I’ve Been Hurt” was most likely the biggest regional hit ever (based on sales and airplay) prior to 1980. To show the importance of regional sales and airplay, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs have an RIAA Gold Record for Maurice’s song “May I” that never made the Billboard Top 100. Many radio stations and DJs consider “I’ve Been Hurt” to certainly be the biggest selling and most played Tams song EVER, even though it was primarily popular in the southeast (and not recognized as a national hit by Billboard).

Their total honors include:

  • 1 Platinum record
  • 2 Gold Records
  • 13 Albums
  • Featured in “Top of The Pops”
  • Featured in “Gold Mine” magazine

Jebb Mac Band

Jebb Mac Band, five members in the back row, three in front, standing in front of a large oak tree.

The Jebb Mac Band is the perfect way to punctuate a warm Southern beach day of sun-soaked friends and iced-cool drinks. Like a hurricane, they release their energy to a packed crowd at a laid back watering hole, with raucous covers ranging from Johnny Cash to Eminem, and original tunes evoking lazy river days and hot Southern nights.

Jebb Mac launched full-bore into the music industry as a member of Justin Smith & the Folk-Hop Band – a dynamic 8-piece from Columbia, SC. While with his former band, Jebb Mac toured with and opened for such national acts as Snoop Dogg, Collective Soul, Rehab, Bubba Sparxxx, Nappy Roots, and more. Ultimately deciding to branch off on his own, Mac released 2 solo albums (Alcohol & Agony and The Suburban Chronicles) before eventually putting together his own band.

While the foundation of its sound is country-oriented, the Jebb Mac Band manages to cross over genres by adding elements of funk, hip hop, pop, and rock. Throw in his brass section and it’s as if Bruno Mars, the Zac Brown Band, and Thomas Rhett were all part of the same band. The band has opened up for country stars like Mitchell Tenpenny, Randy Houser, and Easton Corbin and has also played at the prestigious CCMF (Carolina Country Music Festival) in Myrtle Beach on numerous occasions. Myrtle Beach’s Surge calls Jebb Mac Band’s live shows “dance-friendly, party-friendly,” appealing to “young audiences and young-at-heart fans who crave variety.”

Through his music, Jebb Mac intends to break down the walls and barriers that separate musical genres. Each member of the Jebb Mac Band projects their own diverse musical influence; and Jebb melds those influences into a sound that appeals to just as diverse an audience. Whether they’re singing about kicking back some beverages after a long work week, reminiscing about lost love, or just floating the day away down a river on an inner tube, the Jebb Mac Band creates universal appeal, infusing every song they play with their unique brand of energy, angst, and relief.

Starship feat. Mickey Thomas

A composite image of Starship featuring Mickey ThomasStarship Logo

Mickey Thomas is the owner of the soaring voice that propelled STARSHIP through the decade of the 80’s. With his soulful and compelling vocals, Mickey has established himself as one of Rock Music’s most recognizable stars.

Mickey made his mark in 1976 as lead vocalist on the mega-hit “Fooled Around And Fell In Love” with The Elvin Bishop Band. In 1979, Mickey joined Jefferson Starship as the lead vocalist, after the departure of Grace Slick and Marty Balin, and recorded a string of hits including “Jane”, “No Way Out”, “Find Your Way Back”, “Stranger”, and “Layin’ It on the Line”.

The group was renamed STARSHIP in 1985 and went on to record three #1 hit songs including “We Built This City”, “Sara”, and “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”, from the film, Mannequin, which also was an Academy Award nominee. Their hit “It’s Not Over ‘Til It’s Over” became Major League Baseball’s theme in 1987. Mickey’s stellar voice and video charisma on STARSHIP’s video classics such as “We Built This City” and “Sara” became staples on MTV and VH1.

One can expect to hear hits from STARSHIP and Jefferson Starship at STARSHIP’s live performances, as well as a few selections from Jefferson Airplane as a nod to both band’s beginnings.
